It has been about a week since my 13 year old cat panth was tragically killed by an owl. He was full grown and beautiful, i just did not know. Now after putting all the pieces together we have determined that our beloved Persian cat which went missing 3 months ago fell victim to this large bird as well.
For all of you out there who did not know, an owl can carry an animal 3 times its weight. This particular owl can carry 20 pounds and hunts at sunrise, sunset & night. I live in south Louisiana and never thought of an owl as a predator to a full grown cat. I knew of kittens and rabbits, but not such a lage pet. This owl will attack people in its nesting season if you are close to its area. The color is gray or brown and will at some point take your pet. Our neigbor lost 3 cats and a dog within a short time. I had never met or spoke to her until she saw my flier and filled me with her stories. It was too late.
Now I know and I owe it to my babies to send the message. PROTECT your loved ones from such a vicious attack. If there is an owl in your area, find out its breed and do your reasearch. This may not be an owl capable of taking your large pet but definantly a small one. There are those, like the one Panth & Isabelle encountered, that will pick up something 20 pounds.
I can not even bury my precious pet. I miss them terribly. Don't let this happen to you.

Thank you

I am so sorry for the loss of both your babies,

Panth and your persian too.

I live in Australia, and it for people from the country areas (where my parents grew up and told me these stories - we lived in the city) it is fairly common knowledge that the hawks and eagles 'take' lambs, and these are often twice their size, I am also aware of puppies and kittens being taken by large birds of prey - including crows and magpies.

When I took my darling little Sammy who was an old boy of 19 years of age, into the yard for some sunning or walking around I became scarred as I found some crows and magpies flying low around him when he was resting one day.... by then he was pretty deaf and his eyesight wasn't too good, I realised that they had started to see him as a potential meal... I was freaked out, thankfuly I had a warning... and from then on, he was not allowed outside without me, or I would place him in a 'security basket', where he could lay in the sun, be close to some food and water, have a little shelter and yet be saf from predators....

If I hadn't seen those bids that day, I am pretty sure I would have had an experience life yours, and that is why I felt so strongly about your post, for I could see that it could have so easiy happened to me too...

You didn't get a warning, your couldn't have known it was going to happen...

And now I want you to know how proud I am of you for sending out a flyer, letting people know about the danger, letting them know that there is a risk to their beloved kitties...

You are doing a valuable, kind and caring thing and this is a tribute to the love of your cats...

You are a good and caring person.

Take care adn kow that you ad yours are in my thoughts and prayers,

Kerry
