I got Chip when he was 8 weeks old in February 1990 as a gift. The little grey "pigeon" blossomed into a lovely creature. He knew how to whistle "Dixie" mimicked various sounds like phone ringing, said "I love you" gave kisses, danced to music. Although he wasn't the cuddly type he was very special and was with me for near 18 years. He passed away suddenly last night, I have no idea why, he was fine one moment and gone the next. A shock to me but I'm grateful he didn't suffer much. I just don't understand how he just went like that, I assume a seizure or heart attack? I will miss him deeply. Rest in peace Chip and we will meet again when it is time. "LOVE YOU PRETTY!" XXXXX

Hello JJsMom1 ... thank you for your kind words and for posting a comment! My son and had a pine box made for him (his size) we placed him in the box (nice and comfy, with his favorite mirror and the Rainbow Bridge poem, we wrote our names on the box and buried him in our yard. Knowing that I most likely will not live here in NH the rest of my life, I decided to have him cremated. So I dug him up and took him to the crematory today, picked out a beautiful little urn as well. So now where ever I relocate to in the future Chip will be with me. I will probably buy another bird in the future because although no one will take Chip's place - I want to give someone a good home and love - there are too many animals out there that need to be loved and deserve a good life!

Thanks again for your comment ... Best Joanie

Hi Joanie,
Thank you for all your kind comments about my babies. Yes, it has been a hard year. I am somewhat comforted knowing that they are all together at the bridge.

I am glad you will be able to have Chip with you wherever you are going to relocate to. I know how hard it is to move away and not be able to visit them. I had several pets (a german shepherd and several cats) when I grew up and they are buried in my Mom's yard, but I live here now and don't get over to Germany much anymore.
Chip just stuck out to me when I saw his picture, he's got this beautiful face and eyes.
It sounds like he had a wonderful life with you. I have to be honest, I did not know Cockatiels can get that old.
I am very glad to hear that even though you are allergic to cats, you still try to help them and have a heart for them. Thank you so much.
It's just good to know that there are other people out there who find it in their heart to help these helpless innocent babies and to give them or find them a loving home.
You are right about wanting to give someone a good loving home and whatever bird you are going to get will be one of the luckiest, happiest birds. And Chip would be proud to know that his Mom will give another bird a chance at a loving happy life.
I will keep you, your son and Chip in my thoughts and prayers,
Elke (JJ's Mom)

Hi JJsMom1

The life span of a cockatiel (I had always thought) was 25 to 30 years, but as reading up online about them, the average is 10 to 15 or 15-20, some live to 30 and the oldest cockatiel on record was 35! So as my first assumption thinking the average was 25-30 well I thought Chip had a while to go. It's one week now he's gone, my parakeet mimics his chirp and I sometimes call him Chip out of a reaction. Chip also loved to ride on my dog Barney's back! Barney didn't mind at all. Barney is now going on 15 and health on the decline so this is going to be another very hard thing for me to handle. My hamster "Hammie" also loved to take rides on Barney's back. Hammie I have lit a candle for here but have not developed his page yet. I also have a silky terrier named Benji he's my son's dog, he's only two and a little cutie but no one is like my Barney.

Now onto the cats, back when I lived in New York, I saved this kitten, who all her siblings were already dead and she was near dead, she was basically so sick and weak, infested every part of her tiny body in fleas and maggots. I picked this cat up and took her to the vet. Vet didn't think she would live - was beyond saving. But I saved her. She became a strong healthy kitty and I found a good home for her. I have saved many. I have some squirrels that will take a nut from my hand. I had a chipmunk that came right up to me and sat on my foot (unfortunately the neighbors cat got him. So I have quite a pet cemetary going on in my yard.

I love cats, their eyes, their attitudes, personalities, my mom has 3 (she used to have 7! All of which she took in off the streets! I saved a dog in Mexico and took her back to the states as well along with another cat.

Went to the pet store today! Was playing with a mac caw (sp). What a cute bird he is the smallest of maccaws. He was kissing me, burrowing in my hair and letting me rub his head. I'm tempted to buy him but he will be alot of maintenance and I'm afraid with Benji the silky terrier, we'll he is not the type and I'm wondering how much time I can spend with this bird when Benji is around. MacCaws need alot of attention and freedom from their cages, and I'd be worried about him out and Benji. This will mean also going out and buying a much large cage as Chips cage is not right for him. My son (13) was afraid of him because he has a strong beak and if he did ever bite hard you would be missing a finger or ear!

But I'm so sad to read about all the pets you lost inside of one year, that is really too much to handle.

Thanks for the comments and prayers, healing for you and your family critters and other :o)

Hi Joannie,
I can just imagine how hard this has to be for you, especially if your little parakeet mimics Chip's chirp (and he is probably doing that because he misses Chip and is looking for him) and Chip will always be on your mind and in your heart.
I'm sorry to hear about your loss of Hammie. Hamsters are so adorable and cute:)

Wow, Barney is 15 years old. Barney must be a loving, gentle dog having allowed Hammie and Chip to ride on his back (then again why should he not be, he has such a loving home and Mom). I'm sorry to hear that his health is on the decline and I know it will be hard for you and I hope you will be able to enjoy his love and company for a long time yet. I will keep Barney in my prayers.

So, Benji is the youngster in the family:)I'm sure he will settle down a bit as he will get older. Even though sometimes it depends on the breed, my Onyx was a puppy in his mind till the end even when his body did not want to go along with it.

I love squirrels too, I have several that eat out of my hand. I have one that got hit by a car last year and luckily "only" broke his tail. The back half of the tail is hanging down but otherwise she's perfectly fine and has gotten very tame. They are so sweet, aren't they? My cats will sit on the stairs with me and look right at the squirrels as they come to get their peanuts.
Maccaws are such majestic birds, just beautiful. I understand your worry and that is something that needs to be considered. Benji probably wouldn't mean him no harm but since Benji is still a "puppy", he might accidentally get to rough.

That is such a lovely rescue story about the kitten, God bless you.

I still have a hard time with losing 3 of my babies this past year and a friend forwarned me years ago about all the heartache coming at me, since all my pets are so close in age, but I'd do it all over again.
JJ's momma cat (Jessie)is 17 now and she has CRF, she's doing pretty good this week and I still have Susie and Teddy (JJ's sister and brother) and I have a kitty (Precious) who belongs to someone else, but spends more time at my house than theirs.
I will keep you, your family, Barney, Benji and your little parakeet in my thoughts and prayers and hope that you all get to enjoy each other's love and company for a long time to come.
Thank you for your nice reply and kind words,
Hugs and Love,
Elke (JJ's Mom1)
